Break/New Scrubs

Yep, so we've made it through one "semester" of medical school... cross Histology, Genetics, Immunology, Cancer Biology, and the first parts of Biochem and Anatomy off.  By "we" in "we made it" I refer not only to myself and my classmates, but also to my wife and son, who thankfully still remember who I am. And after getting back the grades this morning from my Biochem test three days ago, I can finally proudly say I got the highest mark possible on every single test.

Today, I had an unwinding day.  I went to the gym, I watched some TV on Hulu, and I cooked some food for our upcoming party, for which I am inviting some friends who are NOT in medical school (still keeping in touch with them!).  Should be a blast.  But back to the TV for a second.  I stumbled upon the last episode of Scrubs and then watched the New Scrubs: Medical School Years, which I had heard of but was too busy studying too take a look at.

I wasn't a crazy Scrubs fan for the first series... I mean, I enjoyed it when I did watch it, and I know all the characters and plot lines, but I don't own the DVDs and I never got any Brown Bear/Vanilla Bear tattoos. Anyway, what I saw in this New Scrubs was some young-looking med students (a really small class, apparently) who are constantly in the hospital.  Now, I don't know if things are vastly different at other schools, but we do not spend anywhere NEAR the amount of time they seem to spend with patients, and I thought we got a lot of exposure here.  But maybe they just choose to focus on the hospital because that's what the fans are familiar with and also that's where all the teachable moments are.  I guess it's a good strategy, because there really are loads of teachable things in this show, as one of MY "faculty advisors" here put it, "Scrubs is the best show as far as showing what being a doctor is all about." And aside from all its joking around and romantic storylines, I kind of hear that.  They do really focus on the turmoil that goes on in a doctor's head, tough decisions they'd have to make, things they think but would never say... as far as the med students are concerned, some of the stuff they deal with really IS spot-on.  But you can go visit hulu, check it out, and decide for yourself. That is, if you are now, or ever have been a medical student. If not, don't worry - if I really keep this blog up, I'll bring in enough stories and dilemmas that you will get a good feel for what a real medical student sees out there.  Let me tell you, it gets interesting.

But that's enough for now. I'm on break, so not only do I have no patient or cadaver interaction to speak of, I have to go relax and enjoy myself. Maybe I'll post again later this week.
